I bought the RSX128 shredder after my Fellowes light-duty cross-cut unit failed catastrophically (the blades bound and broke). I wanted something with slightly more capacity that would not overheat. I don’t shred often, but about once a month I use it continuously for about 45 minutes.

The RSX128 is shipped in a sturdy, reinforced box-on-cardboard pallet, which makes it very easy to unpack. My unit arrived damage-free despite ground shipment across the continental US.

I’ve been using the RSX128 now for about a month, and I’d say it works well but my overall experience is “adequate.” It’s noisier than other shredders in its price range and shredding speed, and while it has not jammed, it has a mechanical sensor that stops the cutters when anything with too much width is inserted. This translates to about 8-9 pages of typical business paper stock. If you, like me, just throw your credit card solicitations into the shredder without opening the envelope, you will be disappointed as they exceed the critical width.

I haven’t been able to overheat the RSX128 yet, but the manual says it has a temperature lockout, so I won’t worry about it. The website specifications say it does not have a bag-full indicator. This may be because GBC recommends bags not be used with the RSX128. In fact, there is an internal sensor that stops cutting once the pile in the hopper rises too high. I recommend emptying the hopper into kitchen trash bags, otherwise you’ll make a mess.

The controls are simple and the hopper flashes red or green based on the shredder’s readiness, a nice touch.

    In summary:

Pros: Fast, attractive, has a decent capacity, shreds CD’s and credit cards with no complaint, simple & easy to understand controls, 20 year warranty on cutter assembly, great packaging

Cons: Pricey, bagless may be issue for some, at 70db is louder than other SOHO crosscut shredders, really 8-9 page shredding capacity due to mechanical sensor
